11/29/2020 Weverton Cliffs is a hike that has been on my AllTrails favorites list for awhile. And from our experience, it was for good reason. You begin the hike essentially going straight up the mountain via stone stairs. The entire first mile is switchback after switchback. You can see where you need to go to get to the top, and how much elevation you’ll be gaining along the way.

Our hike was a cool, fall day. Perfect temperature. Although the trees no longer had their leaves, you could see more views along the way. The forest floor was a blanket of slippery leaves that hundreds of hikers have treaded on before us. There were still pops of green left in the forest and some small wildflowers.

For some reason, I wasn’t winded. I felt energized, my mind clear and focused. And finally getting to the top was worth all of the effort we had put into the hike. And there was this openness… you could see the Potomac River, train track, and layers of mountains. I felt lucky in that moment. To live so close to something like that is new for me. So, we stopped for some pictures and to take in the views, climbing all over the rock.

Although part of me wanted to continue exploring on the AT, the sun would set in not that much time. Down we went. The way back always seems faster somehow. Before going back to the car, we stopped by the creek. We couldn’t access it via the AT, so we just watched and listened to it from the trail.
